The Figueira da Foz Port Authority decided last Thursday to launch the international public tender for the contract to improve maritime access and infrastructure at the Port of Figueira da Foz, with a base price of 24.326 million euros. This contract is of structural importance for the port, as it will enable its infrastructures to accommodate larger ships, in line with the global trend towards increasing the size of ships operating in the market, while at the same time improving navigational safety conditions and increasing the efficiency of port operations, allowing for gains in economic and environmental competitiveness.
This investment, which has always had the commitment of the Port Community and the Municipality of Figueira da Foz since 2018, will allow the Port of Figueira da Foz to receive ships up to 140 meters in length (currently and officially 120 meters) and 8 meters in draught, confirming it more and more as a European port infrastructure contributing to the growth of the Iberian dimension in its hinterland and foreland.
This work, which is of great importance for the growth of the regional and national economy, will be financed by the private sector under the terms of the protocol signed on 25 September 2019 between the APFF, the port operators and the main customers operating in the port.
The project is included in the National Investment Program (PNI) 2030, as approved by Council of Ministers Resolution No. 175/2017 of 24 November, which approves the "Strategy for increasing the competitiveness of the mainland commercial port network", as amended by Council of Ministers Resolution No. 182/2021 of 24 December, and is expected to be co-financed by the Thematic Program for Climate Action and Sustainability.
It should be noted that, as part of this contract, a protocol will be signed with the Municipality of Figueira da Foz and the Directorate General for Cultural Heritage, with the aim of safeguarding, enhancing and musealization the cultural heritage, with particular emphasis on the underwater archaeological heritage identified during the preparation of the Environmental Impact Study for this contract, or any other artefacts of cultural value that may exist in the area to be affected.
Work is expected to commence in the last quarter of 2024 with an estimated completion period of 460 days.
