The administrations of the Ports of Aveiro and Figueira da Foz and Mealhada City Council recently met to launch studies on the business and operational models for the Pampilhosa Logistics Platform (PLP) and to plan the actions to be carried out throughout the process, committing to presenting the preliminary study for this structure in March next year.
With the aim of strengthening the rail link with the ports and creating a quality logistics infrastructure in the Centre region, these entities launched the tender for the preparation of the studies for the future platform, taking into account the recent inclusion of the Pampilhosa Logistics Platform in the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) as the main road-rail terminal in this set of infrastructures and transport management.
Work on the study, which is already underway, includes defining the PLP's operating model, identifying and benchmarking Iberian logistics platforms, studying the PLP's market, proposing a preliminary study, identifying and characterising the infrastructure and superstructures to be built, defining the operating model, financing options and drawing up economic and financial feasibility studies, among others, and the process should be completed by next May.
The construction of an industrial area alongside the platform, the creation of a dry port (customs station) and the possibility of expanding to Coimbra North will be some of the options to be considered in the studies to be carried out with stakeholders in this future logistics solution, located in the municipality of Mealhada.
The PLP will make it possible to increase port and logistics services in the Central Region, as well as modal shift from road to rail, contributing to decarbonisation and making these ports more efficient.
