Last Thursday, 28 November, the Figueira da Foz Port Authority transferred the tugboat Cte. Rocha e Cunha to Atlanticeagle Shipbuilding, freeing up berths in the marina to receive superyachts that have chosen Figueira da Foz as their destination.
After several years, the tugboat Cte. Rocha e Cunha remained at the quay because its capacity was no longer able to meet the operational requirements of the manoeuvres, which were now carried out by larger vessels, the operation was carried out with the assistance of the tugboat Monte de S. Brás, which helped to move the vessel.
The tug Cte. Rocha e Cunha was built in 1963 by Estaleiros Navais do Mondego, now Atlanticeagle Shipbuilding, and its 396hp main engine was built in 1962 in the UK. The tug will undergo initial maintenance at the shipyard, expected to last about a month, to assess the vessel's condition and determine its future use.
The possible preservation of the tugboat Cte. Rocha e Cunha will keep alive the memory of this emblematic vessel, which played a crucial role in the port operations of Figueira da Foz.
With a length of 23.8 metres, a beam of 5.9 metres and a tractive force of 9 tonnes, the tug Cte. Rocha e Cunha is an important symbol of the region's maritime history.
