On 4 February, the foundation stone was laid for the Technology and Innovation Centre (CTI) – SeaPower building, which will be located in a strategic area of Cabedelo in the Port of Figueira da Foz. This project is part of the concession contract signed between the Port of Figueira da Foz and the University of Coimbra to install buildings dedicated to innovation and research in the field of the blue economy.
SeaPower is one of the main pillars of the University of Coimbra's development strategy for its campus in Figueira da Foz. This new infrastructure will enable SeaPower to fulfil its mission of promoting and transferring knowledge, skills, and technology in relation to the sea and the blue economy.
This new unit emphasises the importance of the Port of Figueira da Foz in supporting the development of the blue economy and promoting marine research, thus establishing the region as a leading centre in this strategic area.
Various personalities attended the groundbreaking ceremony, including the Rector of the University of Coimbra, Amílcar Falcão; the Mayor of Figueira da Foz, Pedro Santana Lopes; and the Chairman of the Port of Figueira da Foz's Board of Directors, Eduardo Feio.
It is also worth noting that Marefoz, another innovative project contributing to the dynamism of the blue economy and research in the maritime sector, has already been established in the same port area as Cabedelo.
