The Port of Figueira da Foz is reinforcing its commitment to environmental sustainability through a new renewable energy production project for collective self-consumption. The initiative is part of the port infrastructure's Energy Transition Strategy, aligned with European guidelines. With the application recently approved by the Environmental Fund, the project is expected to begin later this year, involving a total investment of €228,233.

Currently, the Port of Figueira da Foz has photovoltaic solar panels installed on two of its buildings, with a capacity of 35 kW. This new project aims to expand that capacity by installing two additional Production Units for Self-Consumption (UPAC) in the Coastal Fishing Port and the Solid Bulk Terminal areas.

Cost and emissions reduction

The two new energy production units will have a combined installed capacity of 207.9 kW and an estimated annual production of 300,835 kWh, enabling a self-consumption rate of over 80%.

The project is expected to reduce electricity consumption by 249,438 kWh/year, which, from an environmental perspective, corresponds to a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to 21.45 toe/year of CO₂.

With this investment, the Port of Figueira da Foz takes another step in its energy transition, promoting the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, energy efficiency, and greater autonomy from the public power grid — reinforcing its position as a more sustainable and technologically prepared port for the environmental challenges of the future.

The project is funded by the Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP) through the Fundo Ambiental.
