Following the impacts of Storm Kristin, which affected several regions of mainland Portugal and caused power outages and hazardous situations in public areas, the Port of Figueira da Foz aligns with the recommendations issued by Civil Protection and other competent authorities, reinforcing the importance of adopting safe behaviours among the population, port workers and users of surrounding areas.
Electrical hazards in public spaces
Severe weather conditions may lead to fallen power lines, exposed cables or damaged electrical cabinets, which pose serious risks to public safety.
Civil Protection advises that:
- A minimum distance of 10 metres should be maintained from any fallen or suspended power line;
- Power lines or cables should never be touched or moved, even using tools or other objects;
- All electrical equipment and cables should be considered live and dangerous;
- If a power line is on the ground, move away using short steps to reduce the risk of electric shock;
- If a vehicle comes into contact with a power line, occupants should remain inside the vehicle and contact emergency services;
- All hazardous situations should be reported immediately to E-REDES via 800 506 506 (free call, 24/7).
In the event of an accident involving injuries, 112 should be contacted. Assistance should only be provided once confirmation is given that the electrical source has been safely disconnected.
Water, food and sanitation precautions
Power outages may also affect water quality and food safety. The following precautions are recommended:
- Avoid consuming water from sources not connected to the public supply, such as wells or springs;
- Do not drink tap water, wash food or brush teeth unless its safety has been officially confirmed;
- Whenever possible, use bottled water or alternatively boil water for 10 minutes or disinfect it with bleach;
- Carefully assess food stored in refrigerators and freezers after power outages, discarding any items showing signs of spoilage;
- Do not taste food to check its condition. When in doubt, dispose of it.
Safe behaviour during and after the storm
Civil Protection further recommends that the public:
- Avoid crossing flooded areas on foot or by vehicle;
- Avoid direct contact with floodwater;
- Clean and disinfect surfaces that have been in contact with floodwater;
- Use waterproof gloves and boots during clean-up operations;
- Do not handle electrical equipment in areas with standing water;
- Avoid areas with unstable trees or damaged structures;
- Always follow instructions issued by the competent authorities.
The Port of Figueira da Foz urges everyone to comply with these preventive measures, contributing to collective safety and risk reduction during adverse weather conditions.
