The Port of Figueira da Foz took part in the roundtable “Offshore Wind Energy – Pros and Cons,” held during the presentation session of the study “The Impact of Offshore Marine Energy Parks on the Business Structure of the Regions of Viana do Castelo and Figueira da Foz.” The event took place in Figueira da Foz as part of the INOVASEA OFFSHORE project.
The session provided an opportunity for sharing and debate on the economic, business, and territorial impacts of offshore marine energy, bringing together experts, public entities, and companies.
At the roundtable, the Port of Figueira da Foz was represented by Valter Rainho, Member of the Board of Directors of the Ports of Aveiro and Figueira da Foz, who highlighted offshore wind energy as a strategic opportunity, based on a realistic approach and the functional specialization of port infrastructures.
In the case of Figueira da Foz, Valter Rainho emphasized the port’s positioning as infrastructure geared towards operations and maintenance activities for offshore wind farms, benefiting from its proximity to the largest identified offshore park area off the coast of Figueira da Foz. He also responsibly acknowledged the existing physical constraints, particularly regarding draft, available areas, and operational conditions.
Ongoing coordination with local stakeholders was also reinforced, namely with the Câmara Municipal da Figueira da Foz, ensuring that any future development will be carried out in close cooperation with the municipality.
The INOVASEA project, promoted by AEVC and ACIFF, aims to foster innovation among SMEs operating within the Blue Economy of the coastal regions of Alto Minho and Baixo Mondego.
