Figueira da Foz Port celebrated the 60th anniversary of the inauguration of its breakwaters with a programme of commemorative events held between 25 and 30 October.
The celebrations began on 25 October with visits to the port by boat and bus, giving participants the opportunity to learn more about the operation of this infrastructure. Local nautical clubs – Clube Náutico da Figueira da Foz, Mentor, Naval Remo and Clube do Mar de Coimbra – joined the initiative, offering nautical experiences to the community.
The morning also featured the opening of a photographic exhibition dedicated to the construction of Figueira da Foz Port’s breakwaters 60 years ago, as well as entertainment activities for families.
Throughout the week, fourth-grade pupils from primary schools in Figueira da Foz took part in games and educational activities focused on marine biodiversity, as part of the initiative “A escola vai ao porto!” (School Visits the Port), organised with the support of Marefoz – University of Coimbra and Figueira da Foz City Council.
The celebrations culminated on Friday, 30 October, Figueira da Foz Port Day, which also marks the 60th anniversary of the inauguration of the breakwaters, a landmark achievement in the port’s history.
The commemorative session began with a ceremony recognising the service and dedication of the Port Administration’s employees.
This was followed by speeches from Teresa Cardoso, Chair of the Board of Directors of Figueira da Foz Port; Susana Pinho, President of the Figueira da Foz Port Community; and Pedro Santana Lopes, Mayor of Figueira da Foz. Hugo Espírito Santo, Secretary of State for Infrastructure, who was unable to attend in person, joined the celebrations through a video message.
The programme also included the presentation of a video showcasing the ongoing works to improve maritime access and infrastructure at Figueira da Foz Port.
In the evening, a concert by Banda Filarmónica de Lares, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, brought the commemorative programme to a close.
